Private Eye VR | Soundtrack By Joff Winks

Private Eye VR

Private Eye VR began as an ambitious entry into Facebook's Oculus VR Jam, ultimately finishing as a finalist in the competition. The game quickly captured the attention of early adopters of VR, generating excitement for its innovative approach to immersive storytelling, and it laid the foundation for a more ambitious evolution of the title. From the outset, Private Eye demonstrated a willingness to push the boundaries of virtual reality, blending compelling narrative with inventive gameplay mechanics that challenged players to think in new ways.

The original game’s signature spying mechanic - where players piece together a crime by gathering intelligence on their neighbours through a pair of binoculars - received widespread praise for its originality. Equally celebrated was the game’s distinctive locomotion system, which places players in a wheelchair, creating a unique perspective and heightening the sense of immersion. These gameplay choices set Private Eye apart from typical VR experiences and cemented its reputation as a bold experiment in interactive storytelling.

The brilliant voyeuristic gameplay remains at the heart of Private Eye today. Its innovative approach attracted funding and support from notable organisations such as Welcome (formerly The Welcome Trust) and the UK Games Fund, helping the team bring their vision to a wider audience. Creative director Jake Slack brings a sharp aesthetic vision to the project, drawing inspiration from cinematic masters like Martin Scorsese and David Fincher, as well as psychological thrillers like Shutter Island. Every detail, from lighting to environmental design, contributes to the tense, immersive atmosphere that defines the game.

For me, this collaboration is truly a dream come true. It’s rare to have the opportunity to indulge a lifelong love of Film Noir while also contributing to a new interactive medium. Immersing myself in the compositional worlds of mid-century greats such as Bernard Herrmann and Jerry Goldsmith, I’ve relished the chance to craft music that both complements and enhances the game’s psychological tension. Bringing Private Eye to life through sound is a thrilling challenge, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be composing the score for such a distinctive and unforgettable VR experience.
